As well as knowing Botswana pretty well, Letaka Safaris have a few itineraries that venture into neighbouring Namibia as well as Zambia!

Botswana

Botswana is a land-locked country situated in southern Africa, and shares borders with South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Approximately two-thirds of Botswana lies within the Tropics and the country covers an area of 581 730 square kilometres – about the size of France or Kenya.

The capital is Gaborone, with its tourist hub of Maun being the gateway to the Okavango Delta.

Most of the country is flat, with some small hills in the eastern areas. Kalahari sands cover 84% of the surface area. With the exception of the northern areas, most of Botswana is without perennial surface water. Given the fore mentioned, Botswana has some amazing and diverse areas for all to explore and enjoy!

Central Kalahari Game Reserve

The Central Kalahari game Reserve (CKGR) is the largest, most remotely situated reserve in Southern Africa, and the second largest wildlife reserve in the world, encompassing 52 800 sq kms.

During and shortly after good summer rains, the flat grasslands of the reserve’s northern reaches teem with wildlife, which gather at the best grazing areas. These include large herds of springbok and gemsbok, as well as wildebeest, hartebeest, eland and giraffe.

At other times of the year, when the animals are more sparsely distributed, the experience of travelling through truly untouched wilderness, of seemingly unending dimensions, is the draw.

The landscape is dominated by silver terminalia sandveldt, Kalahari sand acacias, and Kalahari appleleaf, interspersed with grasslands, and dotted with occasional sand dunes, pans and shallow fossil river valleys.

CKGR is unique in that it was originally established (in 1961) with the intention of serving as a place of sanctuary for the San, in the heart of the Kalahari (and Botswana), where they could live their traditional hunter/ gatherer way of life, without intrusion, or influence, from the outside world.

Chobe River

Kasane is the most northern town of Botswana!

Based on the banks of the Chobe River before just before it joins the Zambezi and flows in between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Kasane is a hive of land and water based activities and adventure!

The Chobe River meanders through the floodplains of the Caprivi.

These floodplains make for great grazing grounds for herds of buffalo, many antelope and elephants.

Sunset boat cruises down into the national park often see many species of animals including hippo, crocodile, lechwe, impala as well as numerous water bird species.

If you are lucky enough, the water can sometimes provide a flank for predators hunting prey!

Khwai Concession

The Khwai Community Area is a private concession, bordering Moremi Game Reserve.

This region of the Okavango Delta is a patchwork of floodplains, woodlands, lagoons and rivers, including the magnificent Khwai River.

Being a private concession, outside of the national park boundaries, here we are allowed to conduct night drives, short walking safaris and mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions.

Mababe River Private Reserve

Mababe Private Reserve is situated to the south of Chobe National Park and approximately 40km East of the Khwai Concession

Mababe Private Reserve offers a much more private and nature respectful game viewing experience. With campsites on the banks of the Khwai River, this area has stringent rules on numbers of vehicles allowed in the concession as well as strict rules at sightings, this area boasts plenty plains game and predator action.

Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve is situated in the central and eastern areas of the Okavango.

Contained within an area of approximately 3900 sq kms, here land and Delta meet to create an exceedingly picturesque preserve of floodplains – either seasonally or perennially wet, waterways, lagoons, pools, pans, grasslands and riparian, riverine and mopane forests.

This makes for spectacular game viewing and bird watching, including all major naturally occurring herbivore and carnivore species in the region, and over 400 species of birds, many migratory and some endangered.

Nata and the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

Nata is about 3 hours west of Maun and about 3 hours south of Kasane, so is a good resting and refueling spot if traveling between the two.

Nata boasts access to the Nata Bird Sanctuary as well as the two largest pans in the area, Sua and Ntwetwe Pans.

In the peak season, birding, and even game viewing, can be great and when there is water in the pans, thousands of flamingos, pelicans, ducks and geese congregate, creating awe-inspiring scenes.

Nxai Pan & The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

These two national parks are situated next to each other and are found north-east of the CKGR and south-west of Maun.

The western boundary of the Makgadikgadi NP is the Boteti river, which is the overflow river of water exiting the south-eastern stretches of the Delta.

These two national parks have some very different landscapes within them, from the fringes of salt pans to wide open grasslands, during the rainy season these grassland flourish and attract many a grazer from far and wide.

The eastern edge of the Makgadikgadi NP is home to some camps and lodges that know of habituated meerkat populations nearby, whilst Nxai Pan NP is home to the famous Baines Baobabs - a cluster of millennia-old baobab trees.

Savuti - Chobe National Park

Within the Chobe National Park, Savuti is perhaps one of the best-known game-viewing areas in the country. Under ideal conditions, the number and variety of animals seen can be quite staggering.

This desolate, harsh landscape was once submerged beneath an enormous inland sea. Geologically the five main features of Savuti (namely the Magwikhwe Sand Ridge, the Mababe Depression, the Savuti Marsh with its dead trees, the Rocky Outcrops, and the Savuti Channel) are all intricately linked in the most fascinating manner.

People still speculate as to how this once massive lake received its waters. The most popular explanation is that once the Upper Zambezi, the Chobe, and the Okavango rivers flowed together, across the north of Botswana and down to the sea via the Limpopo.

A gentle warping of the Earth's crust dammed this flow to create a vast lake. In time, however, further crustal movement caused these rivers to find a new route to the sea. The direction of these rivers changed by faulting; the Upper Zambezi and the Chobe turned to the northeast and, after plunging over the Victoria Falls, joined what is now the Middle Zambezi.

Trapped by an emerging rift valley, the Okavango bled its waters into the sand to form the delta. A changing climate which reduced rainfall and brought a return of almost desert-like conditions caused the super-lake to be cut off from its supplies of water, and dry up and vanished.

The Okavango Panhandle

The "Cubango" or the Okavango River feeds the Delta with its life-giving water. Beginning in Angola it forms part of the border between Angola and Namibia before flowing into Botswana and draining into the Moremi Game Reserve.

The river here is deeper and wider and follows larger main channels before splitting into thousands of smaller channels opened by hippos.

The Panhandle begins at the Okavango’s northern reaches, at Mohembo, extending down for approximately 80 kilometres.

Its corridor-like shape is contained within two parallel faults in the Earth’s crust. Here the river runs deep and wide and the swamps are perennially flooded.

The dominant vegetation is vast papyrus beds and large stands of phoenix palms.

The main tourist attractions of the Panhandle are fishing, birding and visiting the colourful villages that line its western fringes.

Namibia is a country in southern Africa, with its western border the Atlantic Ocean, it shares land borders with South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Angola.

Being situated between the Namib and Kalahari deserts, Namibia receives the least rainfall of any country in sub-Saharan Africa.

Most visited places in Namibia include the Caprivi Strip, Fish River Canyon, Sossusvlei, the Skeleton Coast Park and Etosha, all offering differing activities such as game viewing, sandboarding, skydiving or 4x4ing.

Caprivi Strip

The main area Letaka Safaris visits, is a salient of Namibia called the Caprivi Strip.

The salient protrudes eastward for about 450km from the north-eastern corner of Namibia. It is bordered by Botswana to the south, and by Angola and Zambia in the north.

The area is rich in wildlife and mineral resources. Of particular interest to the government of Namibia is that it gives access to the Zambezi River, although first thought of as a potential trading route with Africa's East Coast, it is more used for ecotourism nowadays.

It is a corridor for elephants moving between Botswana and Namibia into Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
