As well as knowing Botswana pretty well, Letaka Safaris have a few itineraries that venture into neighbouring Namibia as well as Zambia!

Botswana

Botswana is a land-locked country situated in southern Africa, and shares borders with South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Approximately two-thirds of Botswana lies within the Tropics and the country covers an area of 581 730 square kilometres – about the size of France or Kenya.

The capital is Gaborone, with its tourist hub of Maun being the gateway to the Okavango Delta.

Most of the country is flat, with some small hills in the eastern areas. Kalahari sands cover 84% of the surface area. With the exception of the northern areas, most of Botswana is without perennial surface water. Given the fore mentioned, Botswana has some amazing and diverse areas for all to explore and enjoy!

Central Kalahari Game Reserve

The Central Kalahari game Reserve (CKGR) is the largest, most remotely situated reserve in Southern Africa, and the second largest wildlife reserve in the world, encompassing 52 800 sq kms.

During and shortly after good summer rains, the flat grasslands of the reserve’s northern reaches teem with wildlife, which gather at the best grazing areas. These include large herds of springbok and gemsbok, as well as wildebeest, hartebeest, eland and giraffe.

At other times of the year, when the animals are more sparsely distributed, the experience of travelling through truly untouched wilderness, of seemingly unending dimensions, is the draw.

The landscape is dominated by silver terminalia sandveldt, Kalahari sand acacias, and Kalahari appleleaf, interspersed with grasslands, and dotted with occasional sand dunes, pans and shallow fossil river valleys.

CKGR is unique in that it was originally established (in 1961) with the intention of serving as a place of sanctuary for the San, in the heart of the Kalahari (and Botswana), where they could live their traditional hunter/ gatherer way of life, without intrusion, or influence, from the outside world.

Chobe River

Kasane is the most northern town of Botswana!

Based on the banks of the Chobe River before just before it joins the Zambezi and flows in between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Kasane is a hive of land and water based activities and adventure!

The Chobe River meanders through the floodplains of the Caprivi.

These floodplains make for great grazing grounds for herds of buffalo, many antelope and elephants.

Sunset boat cruises down into the national park often see many species of animals including hippo, crocodile, lechwe, impala as well as numerous water bird species.

If you are lucky enough, the water can sometimes provide a flank for predators hunting prey!

Khwai Concession

The Khwai Community Area is a private concession, bordering Moremi Game Reserve.

This region of the Okavango Delta is a patchwork of floodplains, woodlands, lagoons and rivers, including the magnificent Khwai River.

Being a private concession, outside of the national park boundaries, here we are allowed to conduct night drives, short walking safaris and mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions.

Mababe Private Reserve is situated to the south of Chobe National Park and approximately 40km East of the Khwai Concession

Mababe Private Reserve offers a much more private and nature respectful game viewing experience. With campsites on the banks of the Khwai River, this area has stringent rules on numbers of vehicles allowed in the concession as well as strict rules at sightings, this area boasts plenty plains game and predator action.

Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve is situated in the central and eastern areas of the Okavango.

Contained within an area of approximately 3900 sq kms, here land and Delta meet to create an exceedingly picturesque preserve of floodplains – either seasonally or perennially wet, waterways, lagoons, pools, pans, grasslands and riparian, riverine and mopane forests.

This makes for spectacular game viewing and bird watching, including all major naturally occurring herbivore and carnivore species in the region, and over 400 species of birds, many migratory and some endangered.

Nata and the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

Nata is about 3 hours west of Maun and about 3 hours south of Kasane, so is a good resting and refueling spot if traveling between the two.

Nata boasts access to the Nata Bird Sanctuary as well as the two largest pans in the area, Sua and Ntwetwe Pans.

In the peak season, birding, and even game viewing, can be great and when there is water in the pans, thousands of flamingos, pelicans, ducks and geese congregate, creating awe-inspiring scenes.

Nxai Pan & The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

These two national parks are situated next to each other and are found north-east of the CKGR and south-west of Maun.

The western boundary of the Makgadikgadi NP is the Boteti river, which is the overflow river of water exiting the south-eastern stretches of the Delta.

These two national parks have some very different landscapes within them, from the fringes of salt pans to wide open grasslands, during the rainy season these grassland flourish and attract many a grazer from far and wide.

The eastern edge of the Makgadikgadi NP is home to some camps and lodges that know of habituated meerkat populations nearby, whilst Nxai Pan NP is home to the famous Baines Baobabs - a cluster of millennia-old baobab trees.
