If you are planning a trip to Africa let us firstly congratulate you on choosing Botswana, Africa’s wistful wildlife and wetland wonderland.  Secondly, congratulations on choosing to travel with Letaka Safaris, Botswana’s premier mobile safari operator.
Letaka Safaris is a citizen-owned safari company that has been operating in Botswana since October 2000. The founding directors, known locally as the Letaka Brothers, have over 34 years of combined guiding experience and have been guiding safaris full-time in Botswana since the mid-90’s. Originally all our safaris were owner-guided but the company has now grown to employ seven of Botswana’s most highly experienced mobile safari guides.

The focus of our company has always been on the quality of our guides, hence our close association with Okavango Guiding School, a training facility which we created to elevate the standard of guiding in Botswana. Many of Botswana’s top guides pass through Okavango Guiding School’s doors at one time or another and we are proud to continue this initiative to create a guiding fraternity that will stand head and shoulders above other African destinations.

Mobile tented safaris in Botswana are without a doubt the best way to experience one of Africa’s last unspoilt wilderness areas, so pack your bags and book that flight!

Botswana as it was seen 45 years ago

Botswana gained it's independence nearly 45 years ago. The following is an article which was published in the Edmonton Journal (Canada) 28/9/1966, and appeared in many other newspapers at the time as well as being distributed by one of the few wire services with a reporter present for the event. It is interesting to look back on how the world saw our wonderful country less than half a century ago. My how we have grown!

Bechuanaland Poor, Hungry Desert Land, Independence to come Friday

by Charles King, Southern News Service

GABERONES, Bechuanaland – An impoverished, arid and hungry land without hope of achieving economic stability makes its debut this week among the community of nations.

The new blue, white and black flags are flying everywhere in Gaberones, its incongruous capital city. But elsewhere in the vast, trackless wastes land that will take the name of Botswana there is little to celebrate.

The Letaka safari was definitely the highlight of the trip.  When you’ve slept in a tent with a leopard calling nearby you have really been on safari. We saw all kinds of game and our guide Disho was the best.  He has an outsize personality and he knows everything about the bush. I was amazed at how good the food was and all cooked over a campfire – we had cheese souffles one night. The staff were just lovely. We were very lucky with other people on the trip and we all got along very well. I miss the smell of mopane wood campfires! We felt a bit superior later in the trip when we met people who had only stayed in lodges and had not experienced a mobile safari.
