About Letaka

Letaka Safaris – Mobile Tented Safaris in Botswana & Beyond

If you are planning a safari in Africa then let us firstly congratulate you on choosing Botswana, Africa’s wistful wildlife & wetland wonderland.  Secondly, congratulations on choosing to travel with Letaka Safaris, Botswana’s premier mobile safari operator.

Letaka Safaris is a citizen-owned safari company that has been operating in Botswana since October 2000. The founding directors, known locally as the Letaka brothers, have almost 40 years of combined guiding experience and have been guiding mobile safaris in Botswana since the mid-90’s. Originally all our safaris were owner-guided but the company has now grown to employ a number of Botswana’s most highly experienced mobile safari guides.

A common misconception is that a camping safari in Botswana means getting stuck in and helping with the setting up camp and cooking your own meals, well, nothing could be further from the truth. The hardest work you are going to have is sipping on your gin and tonic whilst watching the African sun slip below the horizon. And let’s be honest, it’s not really camping is it? Large tents with beds, bedside tables, LED lights, en-suite toilet and shower, covered verandah area with relaxing chairs and washbasins. That’s why we call it a mobile tented safari and NOT a camping safari, our professional safari staff take care of all the camp chores and our wonderful safari chefs are capable of producing miracles from a bed of coals.

The focus of our company has always been on the quality of our guides, hence our close association with Okavango Guiding School, a training facility which we created to elevate the standard of guiding in Botswana. Many of Botswana’s top guides pass through Okavango Guiding School’s doors at one time or another and we are proud to continue this initiative to create a guiding fraternity that will stand head and shoulders above other African destinations.
Mobile tented safaris in Botswana are without a doubt the best way to experience one of Africa’s last unspoilt wilderness areas, so pack your bags and book that flight!

I wanted to say a huge thank you for such a brilliant holiday – one of the best, if not the best, I’ve had: from start to finish – from being picked up at Moremi game reserve by Shadreck for our 9 nights of safari, to the transfer from Botswana to Zambia. The only thing that was a problem was that we had to come home!

I’ve still to sort through nearly 3,000 photos, many of which I know will hit the cutting room floor, but there will definitely be some that will provide the most amazing memories of the most brilliant holiday and they will certainly give me a warm feeling with the onset of our delightful winter evenings here in England.

The camping was great fun, including the open air showers and loos, although trying to have a siesta in tents in 35 degree heat was a tad tricky! Shadreck was a fantastic guide, so tuned in to the sights and sounds around him that we saw over 40 large species of animal and 150 species of birds. I knew that Botswana was reputed to be one of the best places to see a wealth of wildlife and we certainly did see that but this was in no small part due to Shadreck’s intuition and supreme knowledge – with lions and leopards (8 sightings – who said they were elusive – or was it just that we had the most brilliant guide?), both with their cubs and kills (one seconds after it happened with the leopard trying to get it into the tree), hyena and wild dogs with their pups (we saw them so many times that we’d never have known they were rare), a herd of over 1,000 buffalo close up after driving through the marsh (not sure he’d do it again!), many antelope species, including 8 elusive eland running by (sorry you missed them Grant), and the weird and wonderful night-time noises (I think I used up several of my heartbeats one night with an elephant 10m away, and a lion roaring close by)!
