Camp Hwange Recce Trip

News From HQ | 29 June 2012

I have been trying to get to Hwange National Park for about 3 years and finally got the opportunity at the end of my honeymoon to visit this iconic park and it didn’t disappoint.

Camp Hwange is a new 16 bed lodge in the centre of the park and is ideally situated for both game drives and walking activities and was my base whilst in Hwange National Park for 3 nights.  The main lodge and the spacious en-suite rooms are set around a pumped waterhole which, manned by the Camp Hwange staff, is one of the main water sources for the myriad of wildlife in the area including sable, eland, baboons, buffalo, elephant and a pride of 23 lions.

The highlight of the time in Hwange was sundowners at Masuma Dam.  During the dry season this is the largest source of water in the central to eastern part of the park and it shows! With over 300 elephants and 200 buffalo coming to drink along with the resident crocodile making a play for the guinea fowl there was more than enough to sit and watch.  Listening to the lions roaring in the background, we had to pull ourselves away in order to get back to the lodge where we enjoyed a sumptuous 3 course dinner and fell asleep to the sounds of the elephants conversing with each other.

The lodge is owned and operated by renowned Zim Pro guide Dave Carson who is well known in the mobile safari industry in both Botswana and Zimbabwe. Anyone who has had the privilege of being on a walking safari with Dave will attest to his unforgettable passion and never-failing sense of humor as well as a finely tuned sixth-sense that seems to get him to the right place at the right time, every time.

Letaka Safaris have partnered with Camp Hwange and Ilala Lodge in Victoria Falls to offer a 4 night extension package allowing guests to get the most out of their ‘once in a lifetime’ trip to Southern Africa.

Please contact me for further information on this package or for more information on Camp Hwange as a destination.
